FAQ - Personal Leave Notifications

If an employee is unwell and unable to attend work (or are required to take carer's leave), can you make it a requirement that they inform you by a specific time that they will not be attending work that day? For example, can you make it a set  requirement that the employee notify their direct manager no later than 1 hour prior to their commencement time?

While it can be a requirement that an employee notify their direct manager, via telephone, of their intention to take a period of personal leave as soon as is practicable, you cannot make it a firm requirement that an employee notify you of their absence due to illness by a specific time.

However, as a way to help encourage your employees to notify you of their absence at the earliest opportunity, you can include request that employees notify their manager of the requirement to take personal leave as soon as is possible in your workplace policies and employee handbook.
